Southern Finger Lakes Pride Festival

In 1969 the Stonewall riots happened because LGBTQ+ folks, particularly transgender women of color, fought back against hate and police brutality that pervades multiple systems and policies in our country. Pride celebrations have been held in honor and remembrance of these riots, protests, marches and people who paved the way for our rights.

Southern Finger Lakes Pride Festival is many things. It is a celebration of all identities. Of all genders. Of all sexualities. Of rights for all. It is a time to learn. It is a time to educate ourselves on those who stood before us. Those who had their lives taken. It is for those who continue to fear for their lives. Fear for their safety and have lost loved ones.

On the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots our small community stood together. Our community turned into a place that not only celebrated all identities, but took over the streets to welcome these identities. Our community at this moment agreed with our mission: Corning’s inaugural Pride festival in June 2019 brought over 2,000 people to Corning in celebration of LGBTQ+ identities, while also demanding equality in all aspects of life.

We will not stop there. Every June, in person or virtually, we will continue to take time and space to come together.
